The new year should bring a sixth straight year of affordable fuel prices with the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded hovering at about $2.60 - likely hitting a low in February and rising as high as nearly $3 a gallon in May.

The 2020 predicted average is 2 cents cheaper than the final 2019 average of $2.62 per gallon. The estimated 2020 average for the year is the same price as the average price of fuel nationwide at the start of this year - $2.60 per gallon, according to the 2020 fuel outlook from GasBuddy.

The Houston-area average is about $2.23 per gallon today, but the region's 2020 average could range from $2.30 per gallon to $2.45, while Houston's peak in May or June could go from $2.55 to $2.80, said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis.

"It will be another year where gasoline prices will be relatively affordable. But don't close your eyes. The price variation between stations and states will approach record levels. Never has there been a bigger opportunity to spend less, or to spend more, if you aren't checking prices before filling up,” DeHaan said, warning motorists to check prices before stopping at a service station.

Record-high U.S. crude oil production is pushing fuel prices down and insulating against unpredictable accidents, hurricanes or geopolitical events that otherwise could cause gasoline costs to spike, he said.

Seasonally, fuel prices typically hit an annual low in February and then rise with the switch to more expensive summer-grade fuels, peaking in May or June and then falling back down again after August. GasBuddy estimates the national average will rise as much as 75 cents per gallon from a low in February until an eventual peak in May, potentially rising as high as $2.96 per gallon.

The nation’s yearly gasoline bill will rise to $373 billion dollars, an increase of over $1 billion from last year as the average household sees their annual gasoline spending rise to $1,935.

About 75 percent of the country’s largest metro areas could see $3 per gallon at some point in 2020, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C. The largest California cities, as well as Seattle could see $4 gasoline.
