“谁红我抄谁”,硅谷巨头科技公司陷入中年危机

Facebook很着急,它正在被抛弃。Appfigures的最新数据显示,过去12个月,Facebook和Facebook Lite的下载量减少了23%。当然,Facebook多年来家底仍在,即使市场份额缩水,截至今年4月仍有约1100万次下载。

这不是Facebook第一次感到被抛弃。大约在七八年前,Facebook经历了一次年轻用户的“叛逃”:因为平台上涌入了越来越多的中老年用户,而被年轻人认为“不够酷”,于是转向Instagram和Tumblr等更年轻的平台。

自此之后的很多年,Facebook都在努力追赶年轻人的心。一开始是“谁红就收谁”,Facebook对Instagram和WhatsApp的收购时至今日仍然争议颇多;后来又衍生出“谁红就抄谁”,
推出了一大堆几乎是精准复刻的产品。


当年的校园扛把子,现在的中年缝合怪

我们最为熟知的是Facebook与Snapchat的故事。在2012年试图收购Snapchat遭拒绝后,Facebook直接将Snapchat的Stories功能复制出来,并且移植到自己所有的主力产品上,包括Instagram Stories、WhatsApp Status、Facebook Stories和Messenger Day
(后来Messenger Day与Facebook Stories合并)
。虽然媒体对这一堂而皇之的抄袭行为讨伐不断,但Facebook凭借此举大力出奇迹,扛住了Snapchat的威胁,
挽留了年轻用户、收获了真金白银。


当Snapchat在市场上风头渐弱,Facebook又把目光瞄向了新的爆款APP:TikTok。这一次,Facebook同样采取了双管齐下的策略。2018年8月,Instagram官宣推出新功能Reels,允许用户拍摄上传和浏览短视频。这一功能无疑是直指TikTok,引得TikTok官方转推Instagram这条Twitter,并尴尬留言说“额……看起来好眼熟啊”。

几个月后,Facebook还发布了独立APP Lasso,从功能到玩法更是与TikTok如出一辙。不过,Lasso从诞生之日就十分低调,仅仅由产品经理在其社交主页上宣布上线。此后虽有Facebook加持,但主攻美国和中南美洲市场,推进速度缓慢,体量也远远无法与TikTok抗衡。2020年7月,2岁的Lasso寿终正寝,正式关闭。时移世易,Facebook没能复刻围剿Snapchat的成功。

如今,
我们很难想起Facebook近几年发布过哪些原创的创新产品。
比如疫情爆发不久,Zoom借势起飞,Facebook就立马推出Messenger Rooms,想在视频会议领域分一杯羹;前段时间Clubhouse异军突起,Facebook不仅快马加鞭开发出了Live Audio Rooms,还缝合了Clubhouse和TikTok这两个最火的软件,发布短音频平台Soundbites。

还有对标Nextdoor的Neighborhoods、对标Twitch的Facebook Gaming、对标Substack的新产品等。总之,现在的Facebook就像一个努力跟上05后热点的中年人,用尽浑身解数模仿年轻人的招式,但是天不如人愿,就是没内味儿。

从copy to China到copy from China

Facebook并不是硅谷唯一一个忙于“抄袭”“借鉴”的大公司,它只是因为抄得频繁、抄得直白而特别显眼。翻看近些年硅谷大公司的产品目录,总能发现一些不那么原创的身影。

同时,我们看到越来越多的中国科技公司作为创意原产地,出现在国际舞台。除了遍地开花的TikTok翻版之外,还有诸如“美版拼多多”的电商平台、“美版小黄车”的共享单车、“美版微信”的聊天软件等,更遑论小程序、直播电商、红包社交等各公司悄咪咪尝试的新模式了。

于是有人兴奋地表示:copy from China的时代来了。

一直甩不掉“山寨”的标签,是中国科技公司心中长久的痛。
“copy from China”概念一出,自然激发了许多人的自信心。


2017年,李彦宏在百度的夏季年会上发言时直接表态“世界正在从copy to China变成copy from China”。他提到,百度当年的Feed流业务发展迅猛,“据说前几天大洋彼岸也有一个搜索引擎开始做Feed流了”。话毕现场欢呼雷动。联想到百度与大洋彼岸那家搜索引擎之间的微妙关系,“copy from China”就更带有一种“中国人民从此站起来了”的自豪感。

早在2012年,Facebook创始人扎克伯格与李彦宏及人人网创始人会面后,对中国“强大的快速克隆文化”
(strong culture of cloning things quickly)
深感震撼,并且敦促其他高管领会精神,加快产品研发速度。这封邮件在2020年被曝光后,对照对克隆文化毫不避讳的Facebook,更是显得亦酸亦甜。

“copy from China”的进化

从“中国版Google/Twitter/eBay”等到“美国版微信/支付宝/拼多多”,可见copy from China不是一个伪命题,我们的确看到一系列的科技公司在输出中国智慧。
这其中不仅有中国企业在技术上的创造,也有商业上的突破。


十几年前,中国企业在国际市场上是旁观者的状态,因为种种原因,既无力用硬实力较量,也没有什么坐上谈判桌的筹码。那时候的copy to China能够成功,通常是利用中美之间的信息差,享受到中国封闭市场快速增长的红利。

后来,较为独立的中国市场形成了不同于硅谷的科技生态,有些领域走在了硅谷前面,比如曾为人津津乐道的移动支付。在这一阶段,由于中国市场庞大的体量、迅猛的增长态势和独特的环境,获得海外科技公司、投资人和媒体的关注。中国企业变成了被观察者。

在这个阶段,一些外国企业走了一条中国企业曾经走过的老路,也就是
利用信息差,将优质的产品或功能本地化,填补本地市场的空白,占取先机。
而中国企业可能因为还没来得及/没打算拓展海外市场,或者出海遭遇水土不服,而难以施展拳脚。

今天,以TikTok为代表的中国企业则表现出更加广阔的视野,成为国际市场上的玩家。从字节跳动豪掷千金收购Musical.ly开始,就已经盯上了海外市场,毕竟彼时Musical.ly在国内还是个名不见经传的小众APP,却已经吸引了大量欧美年轻人。收购完成后,字节跳动又借助Musical.ly在欧美市场积累的号召力,顺势打造了TikTok,与国内的抖音相呼应,开创了席卷全球的短视频风潮。此时的Facebook和其他公司,想再截胡就不那么容易了。

也许多年后回望此时,
TikTok标志着copy from China的一个新阶段,即中国企业以全球视野出发,开展创新创造。


尾声

从上不了牌桌,到被“雪亮的眼睛”发现,再到主动谋划牌局,中国科技公司逐渐变得有底气,参与游戏的心态也发生了变化。但这仅仅是阳光照耀到的那一面。时至今日,copy to China的事件仍时有发生,最近的一次群体狂欢可能是年初的Clubhouse热,那段时间几乎一夜之间就能冒出几个语音聊天室APP。

摆脱“山寨”的标签固然值得骄傲,不过我们仍然不能被几家大公司成功出海的幸存者偏差蒙住眼。在取得阶段性胜利的时候,仍要看看自己周围。

对比中美两国的独角兽企业,可以发现,中国的独角兽多分布在电商、移动通信、硬件设备、人工智能和汽车交运行业,而美国独角兽多分布在互联网软件&服务、金融科技、大健康、电商直销和人工智能。

中国独角兽企业的互联网流量属性更强,多见于能借助人口红利快速变现的行业,被“抄袭”的企业也多属于这类。相比之下,美国有更多做底层技术研发的独角兽企业,这些公司虽然不如TikTok等消费类产品名气大,却是未来上层应用爆发的基础,也是技术领跑的关键。
这些技术不容易被copy,掌握了它,便能轻松地卡住别人的脖子。


中国企业起步晚、基础薄,走到今日之地位难能可贵。但我们前途修远,仍需求索。
