Founding and Early History (1792\u20131860s)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The NYSE traces its roots to May 17, 1792<\/strong>, when 24 stockbrokers signed the Buttonwood Agreement<\/strong> under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street. They agreed to trade securities among themselves and charge fixed commissions. This informal group laid the foundation for organized trading in the newly independent United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1817, the members formalized their group as the New York Stock & Exchange Board<\/strong>, moving indoors to rented rooms. By 1863, it was officially renamed the New York Stock Exchange<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NYSE became the world\u2019s leading exchange by the late 1800s, fueled by massive capital needs for railroads, telegraph, and electricity. The Panic<\/a> of 1907<\/strong>\u2014a bank run<\/a> that nearly collapsed the system\u2014led to the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1920s \u201cRoaring Twenties\u201d saw explosive growth: the Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a> rose from 63 in 1921 to 381 in September 1929. Margin buying (borrowing to buy stocks) and speculative fever drove the bubble.
